Center of Excellence for Occupational Health

 

The Department of Occupational health was founded in 1990 and is now the top department at Hamadan University of Medical Sciences in the safety and labor Health in Islamic Republic of Iran.

The Ministry of Health and Medical Education has recognized the department as the Excellence Centre of Occupational Health in Islamic Republic of Iran at 2014. The Centre is in charge of instructing students in Occupational Health and Ergonomics. The Excellence Centre  of Occupational Health play vital roles in anticipating, recognizing, assessing, controlling and managing workplace  and  currently consists of 11 full-time faculty academic members. The excellence centre of occupational health is a key component of Hamadan University of Medical Sciences approach and offer courses in fundamental and current topics in  to industrial hygiene, exposure assessment, control technology, ergonomics, physical hazards, analysis and control of chemical agents, occupational toxicology, safety and protection of workers at workplaces. The excellence centre of occupational health provides graduate training at both the masters and doctoral level. Currently, the centre has 30 M.Sc. and 20 PhD students. During our 25-year we have graduated over 600 Bs.C students and 50 Ms.C.

In order to develop and to improve the quality of science and technology activities to achieve the strategic objectives of the development plan, comprehensive scientific map of the country (Iran) in the workforce’s health sector, excellence center of "Occupational Health" at the Faculty of Health of Hamadan University of Medical Sciences, explains obligation to the following principles:

 

Values:

In 32th verse of chapter Al-Maeda (the table) of the wise Quran, God has said: “if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people.”

By following this verse and a commitment to Islamic values and emphasizing the need to protect the public health and implement social justice in the constitution and legislation, in particular the labor law of Islamic Republic of Iran, providing health of the workforce is defined as the fundamental values of this excellence center.

The most important values in this category include the following:

  - Contributing to the preservation and promotion of health as an inalienable right for employees

  - Carrying out fundamental research in order to improve the health of the workforce

  - Honoring the valuable position of labor and practical respect for and protection of the workforce

  - Honoring creativity and innovation in academic activities

  - Honoring the group working on scientific activities

  - Accountability in the area of scientific and executive needs of professional health engineering of the country

  - Recognition of their right to know about their own occupational hazards

  - Attention and observance of religious rules and ethical principles in scientific activities

 

Mission:

The aim of this center is training educates familiar with modern science and technology in the world, the quantitative and qualitative development of occupational health knowledge and trying to solve scientific problems and knowledge needs of occupational health in different parts of government, industries, services and production.

 

Vision :

We are trying to be one of the success national and international excellence centers through developing and improving the scientific level of the field of occupational health and safety with institutionalizing the process of scientific activities and meeting the needs of the country in the executive field and providing technology, and we aim to improve the health of our employees by using new technologies in the production of knowledge and turning it into wealth for the country. This center tries to train efficient, professional human resources through educational, research, executive and management strategies and provides occupational health of the workforce and safety of the work environment with an emphasis on national commitment in this field.

 - Increasing scientific productivity and trying to distribute the occupational health knowledge

 - Activation of industrial centers and agencies in active industrial centers of the country

 - Increasing international communications with the responsible and decision-maker organizations at the regional and international level

 - Industrialization of university educations within the structure of the center

 - Strengthening communication with the country’s activists in the field of the occupational health

 - Active participation in the preparation and implementation of programs to control harmful factors at ministerial level

 - Upstream documentation in the field of occupational health of the country in line with Vision

 - Creation of new academic disciplines in the field of occupational health and safety

 - Creation of databases to meet the scientific needs of the country

 

Laboratories:

The Occupational Health Laboratory is a modern facility that constituted an integrated infrastructure supporting research and technological development and offering a wide range of laboratory services. It promotes occupational safety and hygiene, using the most varied and appropriate methodologies to assess working conditions, supported by cutting-edge equipment. Its activity provides guidance for the, identification of sentinel health events, and monitor exposures in working populations in order to prevent and control occupational hazards and their associated diseases and injuries.

The laboratory provides analytical and consulting services whether to corporations, occupational physicians, safety technicians or others, at the occupational health area. From the numerous conceivable evaluations, these stand out:

Physical Agents: occupational noise, vibrations (transmitted to the hand-arm system and the whole body), luminance, luminance, non-coherent optical radiation, thermal stress and comfort.

Safety Laboratory: The CEOH has an equipped safety lab containing various instruments and tools to implement the practical justification and trainings. There is a safety exhibition area beside the safety labs that presents the visitors some overall safety information. The main sections of the safety lab encompass the below facilities:

-         The fire lab: proximity kits, various fire garments and blankets, fire nozzles and educators, different types of fire detectors, fire alarms, sirens and control panels, various fire fighting extinguishers and foams and other agents.

-         The chemical safety lab: various respiratory protection, including SCBA, canisters and cartridges, different kinds of chemical protective clothing, detectors and gas tests and other required tools.

-         The electrical safety lab: various electrical PPE, fuses, circuit breakers, GFCISs, measuring tools, etc.,

-         The Construction safety lab: various PPE, fall protection instruments, rescue and first aid kits, different labels

-         The machinery safety lab: different kinds of safeguards and hazardous points.

 Chemical Agents: Aerosol such as inhalable and respirable particulates gases and vapor.

The  chemical compounds Laboratory for post graduate students
This laboratory program has Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) , Gas Chromatography (GC), High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC); cold vapor and graphite furnace atomic absorption and spectroscopy ,  UV/VIS spectrophotometry and ion chromatography.  The GC/MS testing section analyzes environmental and other samples for volatile and semi-volatile toxic organic contaminants. The GC and HPLC laboratory sections analyze environmental and other samples for toxic organic contaminants. The Sample Preparation section performs various sample preparation, extraction and clean-up protocols previous to GC/MS, GC, HPLC and ABS. The Trace Metal analyzes aqueous and several non-aqueous sample matrices for the presence of trace metals by cold vapor and graphite furnace atomic absorption and spectroscopy. Solid-phase extraction (SPE), solid-phase micro-extraction (SPME), and headspace sampling are performed in this laboratory.
